This week we had to upload some of our work to show to the class. Was rather nervous about doing this as some of my photos are not the best quality as I have always had to take my own photos of my work and never an actual photographer. First because I didn’t know any and secondly because I didn’t have the money to pay for one. I think it went rather well though and I am proud of my work so far but over the next year I hope to improve my professional portfolio.

What is a professional portfolio?

We have been asked to answer this question and to me it is and collection of your work wither that be photos, videos or sound bites that show off your skills and knowledge within your area of expertise.

We then had to do the following tasks though I will be putting in some photos to show what we had to draw out. We done these tasks in order to come up with a brief/idea/prototype of what we want to work on for this year.

The first task I done was a table which I will insert a picture of bellow. It asked as to write dine things we like doing? Thing you care about? And things you are good at? This task helped to come up with further ideas for what I can do within the makeup industry.

After doing this I then went on to the next task and I had to come up with a Big List of Possible Ideas. I came up with a fair thew that have been floating around my head for a while.

  • Tutorial – makeup videos

  • Theatre work

  • Glam Mua

  • Bridal Mua

  • TV and Film

  • Face painter

  • Sculptor

  • Graphic Designer – face charts

I then made a list of the general positives and negatives of these idea. I spoke about with some other people in my class, and I found this to be helpful as they gave me a different point of view.

Positives

  • Exposure

  • Highly trained – have years of education

  • Wide variety of skill - I can do more than one theme of makeup

  • Doing something I love

  • Showing people how to do makeup

  • Giving people confidence

  • Supplying a luxury service

Negatives

  • Big market – it very saturated

  • Where is the call for it?

  • Price of products, tools and equipment

  • Getting stuck doing the same thing all the time. Falling into a pattern and getting bored.

Would your nan understand it? Would your kids?

  • Yes, they would. I would explain that I want to film myself doing makeup and explain what I am doing step by step to create a tutorial. I will then edit the footage and post in on social media.

What do you want to do? Rephrase it 3 times

  • I want to make makeup tutorials

  • -I plan to film and edit videos of character makeup

  • I want to film myself doing makeup and explaining what I am doing and then upload it to the internet.

How are you going to do it? Rephrase it 3 times

  • I will film myself

  • I will create an area and film myself doing makeup

  • I will teach myself to edit videos

Four ways it will not work?

  1. Big market – won't be noticed due to so many others doing the same thing.

2. Editing skills – the editing won't be any good and people will not want to watch.

3. Getting stuck – falling into a pattern of doing the same thing all the time.

4. Price – products and filming equipment are expensive

I was then asked to draw a photo of my idea. It's awful ha-ha. Actual drawing is not something I'm good at unless I'm copying something so yeah, it's not the best but I will insert the photo below.

What does a good job look like for you? Quantitatively? (money, sales)

  • For me it would be gathering and creating a great audience in which trust me and my opinion. From this I can make money on YouTube and then do product links, brand deal and maybe even a collaboration.

And qualitatively? (Quality of life, happiness)

  • It would be more financially comfortable. Happy that I'm doing what I love and making money from it and also being able to share my knowledge and skills with others and help them in some way.

For this task we where asked to write for 6 minuets undisturbed and just to let our answers to the following questions flow. I shall put my answers down below. I found this be very difficult as I felt I was being asked to bare my soul almost and talk about my greatest fears. I have not really done any reflective writing so far during all of my years of studying so I was very unsure if I was even writing anything that made sense or was relevant but I thing that was the actual purpose of this task. To slowly introduces us to reflective writing and how it can make us look out ourselves and what we have learned and what we have yet to learn.

  1. Reflection - Discuss any issues or concerns you may have about your practice?

My biggest concern when it come to my Makeup Artistry is that I'm not going to get where I want to go. The makeup industry is just so big its first off hard to choose what to specialise in but then on the other hand some area such as bridal makeup are already so saturated with so many amazing artists its scary to find ones place and then also stand out. Another thing is actually setting up a business and finding the money to fund it as it is sooooo expensive to start a something such as a salon. Its also not something you can do over night it takes time and I find myself stretched for time as it with being a full time student and then working everyday. Honestly it just seems scary and hard to start a business and I don't even have a brand yet either.

2. Analysis

What is happening? - I am currently starting as new course doing a BA Creative Enterprises and have just finished doing my HND Makeup Artistry for TV, Film and Theatre. I'm hoping that by doing this BA I will learn how to brand, market and create my own business.

What am I assuming? - The WORST! If its one thing that I am good at its assuming the worst always. In this case that I am going to fail the entire course.

What does this show about my beliefs? - I do love my industry and I love makeup and being creative but I really need to work on my confidence within myself and with my skill set.

What are alternative ways to look at this and? - Clients have always given me great reviews and are always happy with the service that I have provided for them. Tutors have also told me that I have grown developed my skills to an excellent standard.

3. Action

  • Build confidence

  • Practise more looks to develop my skills even further

  • Start posting on social media again

  • Save money

  • Create a brand

  • Smash this course!

Task 3

I found this task to be rather odd and a bit uncomfortable. It asked us to take a tape measure and measure out our age and then to draw it onto the page. Then we had to do a small section put the ages in which family members had passed. We had to then write down when we planned to retire and then come up with how many years we think we would then have left to spend time doing thing we loved. Though we had to subtract 1/3 of the number as that would be how long we would spend sleeping. Im not too sure if I have explained this properly at all but I did in face take a photo so I could add it to hear to show you what i came up with. I thing the point of this task was to such us that life should be fun and filled with doing thing that you love. For me it told me I had 24 years to have fun which I actually thong is rather good.

My first class. Wow what a lot of information to take in. Through this blog I am going to post about my learning experiences, development and self reflection on my Professional Practice Portfolio and hopefully by the end of the course I shall have learned something and created a products, service, pilot or prototype for a future business proposal.

Task 1 - As a group we had 10 minuets to discuss and answer the following questions.

  1. What is a pilot/prototype?

It is the initial idea/plan of a service, product, show etc. Relating this back to my field which is makeup artistry is would be design plans, photos of practices or a mood board.

2. What is development?

This would be practising and then changing and adding to the initial idea. Trying different products, techniques and experimenting.

3. What is a business model canvas?

It is a template that you can use to breakdown your services and business. For example lashes, nails and makeup.

4. What is reflective analysis?

A style of writing that allows you to process what you have experienced. Discuss certain events and critically thing about what happened, what you've learned and why.

5. What is design thinking?

this is when you test what your pilot is and then find out what the flaw are. Then you would then fix the flaw and then try again. What works and what doesn't?

Test, find, fix, repeat.

6. What is a reflective journal?

A day to day record about what you are learning, achieving, how everything is going. what your creating and why. For example keeping a physical journal that you write in or a blog.
