Research and Analysis

Why a YouTube and Podcast Show?

When trying to produce an idea of what I wanted to do, I had to look at what I am good at. What are my strengths and weaknesses? Last year during my HND I decided to document everything I was doing that year by making TikTok videos. This is something I really enjoyed doing. I also loved to post short videos during lockdown of me doing my makeup. Another thing that I am good at is talking to people and communicating with others. So that's how I have produced the idea to create YouTube videos and a podcast show. I want to show off my skills and knowledge in makeup but also share an interesting story.

Makeup Tutorials

With the launch of YouTube in 2005, it then quickly became the world's most popular online videos-sharing platform. Since its launch people have posted makeup tutorials. Some of the most popular being Nikki Tutorials, Jeffree Star, Laura Lee, Jamie Genieve, and James Charles. All have shot to fame from making YouTube videos and have then gone on to become beauty influencers. They get paid to then work with brands and promote products. Some have even gone on to create their own makeup lines and companies. When it comes to making makeup tutorials though there does seem to be a basic formula that you can follow. By doing this you can successfully make a video but what makes people more successful than others is their personality. It is important to let that shine through, as that is what people will, encourage people to come back to your channel. Down below I have put in a step-by-step- video that I have found informative down below.

Podcasting

When I started looking into podcasting and how to do it, I thought what better way to learn about than to actually listen to a podcast about podcasting. I went onto Spotify and found a series of podcast episodes about how to create one, what topics to choose, how long they should be etc. I have linked the first couple of episodes down below. I really like them and found them to be informative, especially as someone who is a beginner and never done one before. I think for me podcasting is about creating an audio book that then shared with the world, they can be on any subject you like and near enough anyone can do it, hence why they are so popular.

What is an influencer?

If you ever go online today, you will come across influencer. These are individuals that have built themselves on a social media platform such as YouTube, Facebook, Tiktok and many more. These people work full time creating online content, they work with brands and their aim is to sell product, services and an overall lifestyle.

“ What is an influencer?

An influencer is someone who has:

  • the power to affect the purchasing decisions of others because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with his or her audience.

  • a following in a distinct niche, with whom he or she actively engages. The size of the following depends on the size of his/her topic of the niche.

It is important to note that these individuals are not merely marketing tools, but rather social relationship assets with which brands can collaborate to achieve their marketing objectives.” (Geyser,2023)

When I came across this article by Geyser, I found it t really be quite insightful and really went in depth about various kinds of influencers.

“ You can separate different types of influencers in multiple ways. Some of the most common methods are by follower numbers, by types of content, and by the level of influence. You can also group influencers by the niche in which they operate. This means that influencers who may appear in a low category by one measure may seem more influential when looked at in another way. For example, many mega-influencers are also celebrities. Yet both these groups often have less real influence on their audience because they lack expertise in a dedicated narrow niche. Some micro and even nano-influencers can have a tremendous impact on followers in their specialist niche. They may be of significant benefit to a firm selling a product targeting that sector.” (Geyser,2023)

Market Trends and Finance

Social media is bigger than ever. With billions across the globe using, it every day in some form. With this comes market trends, I wanted to investigate these when doing my research as it will later help me find my own niche in what I want to do and who I want my targer audience to be. when researching I came across a Forbes article about current market trends. It was fascinating to look at the numbers and just how big social media is.

“Social media is about more than just apps and platforms: It’s a digital environment that’s clearly reshaping the world of marketing. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube are the arenas where your brand can truly connect, engage and grow with your audience. With our 2023 social media statistics as a road map, embrace the evolution of social media and watch your brand story unfold in captivating ways.” (Bottorff, 2023)

"As of April 2023, the fastest-growing social media platform is BeReal

BeReal has been lighting up the social media stage, with a 313% surge in user interest reflecting a rapid climb from 0.7% to 2.8% usage. Here’s the real headline: BeReal’s 1,200% increase in Gen Z usage.[15] Whether its commitment to authentic, unfiltered content will prevail against the threat of imitation and potential obscurity is still to be seen.

81% report that social media increases accountability for businesses

Today’s brands are held to a higher standard than friends, family and even politicians, with a staggering 81% of individuals believing social media has raised the bar for business accountability.[5] While navigating this more complex landscape will be challenging for businesses, it also offers opportunities for those businesses that can adopt transparent and authentic social strategies to foster strong brand-consumer bonds." (Bottorff, 2023)

Products, Tool and Equipment. What will I need?

  • Makeup products

  • Studio space

  • Model

  • Camera

  • Mic

  • Cinematographer

  • Editing soft wear

When looking to everything I need these are the main things that I require. Makeup wise I am sorted. I have a large kit already due to my years of learning makeup and doing it also. I need but don’t have is a space to film and record, a model aka a person I am going to be interviewing. I need a person with the knowledge and understanding to help me recorde and produce the final prototypes of the show. Though I will teach myself it would be good to have a mentor to learn from also so that I can have a hands-on learning experience.
